- Shenzhou 23 successfully ascended to the skies, marking the beginning of a new journey of "chasing the sun" in perovskite energy technology
At 23:08 on May 24, 2026, the Long March 23F Yao-23 carrier rocket ignited and lifted off at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, successfully sending the Shenzhou 23 manned spacecraft into its designated orbit. Six hours and five minutes later, at 5:13 a.m. on May 25, the Shenzhou 21 astronaut crew, carrying out their mission in orbit, opened their "door" to welcome the Shenzhou 23 crew who had traveled from afar to the Chinese space station. This was the eighth "space rendezvous" in China's space history

At this exciting moment in space, a key technology related to the future energy supply for space stations and deep space exploration—perovskite solar cells—has become the focus of attention. This marks a critical stage for perovskite photovoltaic technology to officially move from ground research and development to space application validation, providing an important technical reserve for the configuration of next-generation space energy systems.

During an interview at the launch site, Professor Cang Huaixing, a researcher at the Center for Space Application Engineering and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented reporter Lao Chunyan with a perovskite solar cell product jointly developed by Peking University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and Harbin Institute of Technology. This battery features the remarkable characteristics of being "lightweight, thin, and flexible," with a thickness of only 1-2 microns.

Professor Cang Huaixing pointed out: "Currently, its solar energy conversion efficiency has reached 30%. We hope that after nearly a year of space experiments, its degradation will remain minimal, for example, at least 27%. "This battery will be directly exposed to the space environment, subjected to harsh real-world tests such as ultraviolet radiation, high-energy particle irradiation, atomic oxygen corrosion, and temperature alternation.

Zhu Cheng, member of the perovskite-based tandem solar cell project team and associate professor at Beijing Institute of Technology: "The actual environmental exposure in space will answer how long current battery technology can stably and continuously generate electricity." "
Professor Zhu Cheng stated that compared to the traditional cost of space photovoltaic cells, which reach hundreds of thousands of yuan per square meter, once perovskite cell technology matures, costs are expected to drop to tens of thousands of yuan per square meter. This marks that perovskite batteries not only offer high efficiency and lightweight advantages, but are also expected to significantly reduce the cost of aerospace energy systems, providing efficient, lightweight, and low-cost all-new energy solutions for future space station operations, deep space exploration bases, and low-orbit satellite networking

As a third-generation cutting-edge photovoltaic technology, the industrialization of perovskite cells lies in large-area, high-precision, and highly uniform thin film coating processes. Device performance is extremely sensitive to the uniformity of perovskite active layer thickness, crystal quality, and interfacial defect density, which places very high demands on the precision control of coating equipment.
From ground-based fabrication to space applications, perovskite cells face the manufacturing challenge of transitioning from laboratory-grade small-area devices to space-grade large-area modules. Under microgravity conditions, the kinetic behavior of solution coating, solvent evaporation rate, and thin film nucleation and crystallization process all differ significantly from those on the ground, posing new challenges for adaptive design of coating processes.
